
Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) was born to Jewish parents in western Ukraine. The family fled anti-Semitic pogroms, moving to Brazil in 1922. Lispector spent her girlhood in Recife, and at the age of nine moved to Rio de Janeiro. She later lived in Europe and the United States where her husband served as a Brazilian diplomat. Lispector returned to Rio in 1959, earning international acclaim with her novels and short stories.
